The Trip: Cleveland (Ohio City), August 2018
The Story:
I have been a fan of baseball as long as I can remember. Early in my life we saw Indians games at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, when tickets were easy to come by. I even got to travel by train to Tucson with my Dad to see Spring Training at Hi Corbett Field. Around middle school, the Indians transitioned to 455 straight sold out games at Jacobs Field and two World Series trips. That meant that mainly I was watching Jack Corrigan and Mike Hegan on WUAB, or listening to Herb Score and Tom Hamilton on the radio. Whenever I had the chance, however, I relished seeing games in person.
As an adult, I have continued to seek out games. Lately, that means I have been catching the Indians as they visit parks throughout the country. When I am back in Cleveland and the Tribe is in town, though, I enjoy the chance to attend. On the final day of August, 2018, I did so and went to a game at (now) Progressive Field with my siblings. Some complain about the pace of the game, but I find it a great chance to catch up.
The Shot:
After the Indians defeated the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays, we started the trek from the upper levels of the stadium to the exit. Since I attended high school in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland (just across the Cuyahoga River from downtown), a revitalization has occurred in the area. New apartments, shops, breweries, and restaurants have renewed Ohio City; on this evening a few of those residents had attended the game. As I was walking along the outside ring, I got a clear view of the Hope Memorial Bridge, the West Side Market tower, and the St. Ignatius HS main building tower. The Art Deco Guardians of Transportation stood watching the pedestrians returning home across the mile-long viaduct. Luckily I had brought my trusty, compact Nikon P7700 with me. This view of Ohio City was one I did not want to pass up!
