The Trip: Seattle 2013
The Story:
During July of 2013, I had arrived in Seattle to sight-see and take in a Cleveland Indians game as they were in town to play the Mariners. Having arrived on Amtrak‘s Coast Starlight, I was fresh from seeing the coast of California and Mount Shasta. Exploring the skyline of downtown Seattle was a good balance before seeing the Tribe game. The clock tower of King Street Station, the soaring Space Needle, and curves of the EMP are all notable. These mesh with the traditional architecture around the city to make for a pleasant tour.
After visiting the area around the Pike Place Market, I found the Central branch of the Seattle Public Library incredibly interesting. The branch has an angular glass exterior shell composed of geometric panes. This feature allows plenty of natural light among the many reading spaces, as well as unique city views.
While exploring the book stacks and study areas, I noticed the fluorescent colored escalators. I was investigating a potentially intriguing angle when a lone pedestrian ascended. Her nonchalant gaze and casual style stood out to me as she gazed through the adjacent window. Against the loud escalator, it seemed a sharp contrast.
With the static main subject, I thought a slow shutter speed to blur the movement slightly would finish nicely. Having to hand-hold my camera, a 1/20th shutter speed was a bit of a risk; luckily, it worked out. The book stacks give some reference to the location, and the blur of the stairs and passenger convey the motion. The next day I was able to enjoy an Indians victory at Safeco Field, capping off a great visit.
