The Trip: Columbus, Mississippi 2010
The Story:
I was visiting Columbus to participate in a career day, sharing my experiences with students so that they could make informed decisions about their future. Before leaving, I had an afternoon to myself that gave me just enough time to visit Proffitt’s Porch. It’s a family-run restaurant, off the beaten path with meals worth seeking out if you’re around Columbus, MS.
I made the turn off Highway 45 towards the Tombigbee River and Waverly Ferry; most of the drive is through thick forest of the watershed. As you’re cruising down Officer’s Lake Rd, there’s a break in the tree line where you can look out over Officer’s Lake itself with a small sandy beach area. Just past the lake is the hummingbird adorned sign for the restaurant.
The Shot:
As I pulled into the restaurant parking lot, I noticed a scarecrow-like figure that was new to me. With a blue-sky backdrop and the changing of the leaves, the pink-adorned figure really stood out against the reeds. The outfit was something a grandma might wear, and I thought the scene was something my mom might find neat. Luckily I had my camera on hand, so I grabbed my D700 and 50mm f/1.4 to frame the scene. The photo turned out as I was expecting, but to make the gift I decided to frame it on my own. That was definitely an experience, and it’s fair to say I’m not a skilled crafter. It worked and my mom enjoyed it, but that was definitely an experience that led me to entrust all of my further wall art photo products to Mpix! They do a great job where I struggle.
